2025 Volume 8 Issues 1–3 (Published 26 August 2025)
Dear colleagues,
With great satisfaction, we are pleased to present the next triple issue of "INEOS OPEN". This time it includes communications from the participants of the anniversary conference "The Chemistry of Organoelement Compounds and Polymers – 2024", which was held in Moscow from November 18 to 22, 2024 and was dedicated to two significant events: the 70th anniversary of INEOS RAS and the 125th anniversary of its founder—the full member of the Academy of Sciences Alexander N. Nesmeyanov. (These anniversary events and the conference were highlighted in the forward to one of the previous issues of INEOS OPEN (issues 4–5, 2024), prepared by the associate editor of the Journal—the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences A. A. Trifonov.) The editorial staff of the Journal has carried out a titanic work. After the peer review, the issue portfolio included 66 reports, which represented either original experimental works or brief reviews of the authors' own works. The topics of these publications cover a broad range of chemical disciplines, including organoelement, coordination, physical, medicinal and polymer chemistry, as well as homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, materials science, etc. Owing to the responsiveness and understanding of the importance of the common cause on the part of INEOS RAS researchers, it was possible to select recognized experts in the relevant scientific areas for the assessment of each manuscript. In difficult situations, researchers from other organizations under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation graciously agreed to assist, which evidences the authority of our Journal in academic community.
The authors of the issue include both the well-known figures in world science with academic titles and regalia and very young teams for whom such experience of an independent publication of scientific work was the first one in their career. In this respect, the conference issue is fully consistent with the scientific program and the spirit of the passed event, which was a mixture of experience and youth. In 1999, when the program of the conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of A. N. Nesmeyanov was developed, a swarming line of heads of the INEOS RAS laboratories, wishing to sign up as speakers, was formed in front of the doors of the program committee. In 2024 these leaders strove to give the right to tell about their discoveries to younger researchers. Such trends and opportunities undoubtedly create favorable conditions for the growth of the scientific potential of both INEOS RAS and the entire Russian science.
Some research groups presented several publications at once, which allowed them to more fully reveal the breadth and significance of their scientific work. Traditionally, high publication activity was demonstrated by the specialists in the chemistry of high-molecular compounds. In particular, the Kazan scientific group of I. S. Antipin presented new results on the modification of plastics based on polyphenylene sulfide for 3D printing. M. V. Bermeshev with colleagues from the Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis of the Russian Academy of Sciences demonstrated the inexhaustive possibilities of ruthenium-catalyzed metathesis of olefins in the synthesis of polymeric materials, including gas separation membranes. Polyaminosaccharide chitosan was in the focus of attention of several research groups under the guidance of S. N. Chvalun, A. Yu. Vasilkov and others. In addition, the conference issue included the report devoted to the creation of porous polymeric structures for wastewater treatment and prepared by Iranian scientists M. Shirzadkhan and M. Nouri, whose presentation at the conference, as well as the publication itself, were highly appreciated by the scientific community. Of course, organometallic chemists had no right to lag behind either, A. N. Nesmeyanov would not forgive us for this. Moreover, at present this is no longer such a difficult task, because most of the basic approaches in modern organic synthesis are based on metal-catalyzed processes. In particular, the issue presents a number of works by the group of O. V. Borshchev from the Institute of Synthetic Polymeric Materials of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which are devoted to the palladium-catalyzed synthesis of highly effective organic luminophores based on thiophene and benzothiophene blocks. Among the classic organometallic works, of note is the creation of catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of proton based on acetylide and vinylidene complexes of iron and rhenium under the supervision of N. A. Ustynyuk, a former student of A. N. Nesmeyanov. But the greatest attention of A. N. Nesmeyanov would certainly have been given to the work of I. A. Cherepanov and his colleagues, where the authors, in search for new effective herbicides, managed to merge mesoionic oxadiazoles with the founding father's favorite ferrocene.
Having celebrated its anniversary, our Institute entered the next five-year period of its development. And there are already certain prerequisites to look forward with optimism. During this incomplete year, five doctoral dissertations have been defended or prepared at the Institute, with the average age of the authors not exceeding 37 years. The Center for Collective Use of INEOS RAS received the first projects from the Russian Science Foundation and supplemented its instrument park with a solid-state NMR spectrometer sensor and a new X-ray diffractometer. The series of these pleasant events was continued by the Editor-in-Chief of INEOS OPEN—the full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Aziz M. Muzafarov, who celebrated his 75th anniversary in August! The Directorate of INEOS RAS and the Editorial board of INEOS OPEN wish him health, long life, family well-being and further creative achievements!

Sincerely yours, |
