Aziz M. Muzafarov
Academician, Dr. Sci. (Chem.), Professor
Head of the groups at Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds
and Enikopolov Institute of Synthetic Polymer Materials
Aziz M. Muzafarov graduated from Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology in 1973. He did the diploma work at the chair of a distinguished scientist – academician K. A. Andrianov. In 1981 he received the PhD degree from Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds for investigations on new highly functionalized organosilicon oligomers and heat-resistant polymers.
Following a period of fruitful research activity at Enikolopov Institute of Synthetic Polymer Materials, in 1991 he was appointed a head of the Laboratory of Synthesis of Organoelement Compounds. In 1997 he completed his habilitation by successful defense of a doctoral dissertation on organosilicon dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers at Karpov Institute of Physical Chemistry (in the form of a scientific report). A. M. Muzafarov is one of the pioneers of this field of chemistry. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, the Russian Academy of Sciences awarded him with the prestigious Lebedev Prize for a series of publications devoted to the first organosilicon dendrimers. For a long period of time he was a visiting researcher at the Ulm University (Germany) and in 2002–2005 he headed the Group of Synthesis at the Department of Polymer Science.
A. M. Muzafarov was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2000 and became a full member (academician) in 2011. He was a member of the Scientific Council on High-Molecular Compounds of RAS. He has founded and runs scientific school "Macromolecules-particles as a new form of macromolecular compounds". In 2008–2013 he guided the Expert Council on Chemistry of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and was awarded a commemorative diploma for participation in the Foundation activity on the occasion of its 20th anniversary.
In 2011 A. M. Muzafarov became a head of the Laboratory of Organosilicon Compounds of Nesmeyanov Institute of Organoelement Compounds. Less than in two years he was appointed a director of INEOS RAS and guided the Institute until the end of 2017.
A. M. Muzafarov is an author and coauthor of more than 250 articles, 10 book chapters, and 50 patents. His investigations are focused on the chemistry of organosilicon compounds and are aimed to develop new polymer forms. His current research interests include dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers, functional metallosiloxanes, hybrid organic-inorganic structures, supramolecular organization, and chlorine-free technologies. Since 2017 he is a head of Chemical Sciences Division at the Department of Chemistry and Materials Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
